Working in Hostile Environments

Being a truly global company, we realise that our engineers may have to work in hostile environments and run risks such as being shot in a war-torn country like Iraq, or being taken hostage in a country like Iraq or Afghanistan, or being taken hostage in a country such as Nigeria.

We noticed that engineers were being sent to these countries with little or no training on how to cope with their new environment, not really sure of what awaits them on their arrival. Its bad enough to work in another country away from family and friends - to work in a country which could be dangerous to your health adds significantly to the stress!

To that end, we have teamed up with Centurion who, through their training and services, prepare people both mentally and practically for dangerous work in extreme conditions. They also offer support on the ground to enable staff to go about their normal activities more safely.

Centurion have a team of high-calibre professional safety instructors and advisers who specialise in confronting dangerous situations at home and abroad. They draw on knowledge gained during hundreds of man-years' experience as instructors with Britain's Royal Marine Commandos and other Special Forces units. In addition to their military service of at least 20 years apiece, they also hold civilian instructor and assessor qualifications.

The Hostile Environment Course aims to help participants learn to protect themselves more effectively in volatile areas by identifying hidden dangers in order to minimise the risks to themselves or their colleagues and prepare risk assessments as part of a regular safety routine.

What is a Hostile Environment

A hostile environment can be anywhere where there is a threat to personal safety or security. War zones are obvious examples, but other examples include areas where any of the following may exist:
Harsh climatic conditions
Extreme poverty
High crime
Poor health and hygiene
Unfriendly governments or regimes
Natural or man-made disasters
Civil, military or political unrest
Religious fanaticism
Terrorist activity
Inhospitable terrain
